How Light Becomes a Mark

A laser doesn't paint or print. It's a single, extraordinarily precise point of heat, guided by code, moving across the surface thousands of times a second. Nothing touches the material except light; and where it lands, the material itself changes.

On wood, that heat chars the surface layer by layer. A lighter pass leaves a soft tan; a deeper one burns down toward black. The same design can look entirely different depending on the grain it lands on; no two boards take a mark quite the same way.

Glass doesn't burn. It fractures, at a microscopic scale, into thousands of tiny points where the surface turns opaque white against the clear underneath.

Slate holds a pale stone underneath its dark, weathered face. Engraving doesn't add color to it; it removes that dark layer and lets the lighter stone underneath do the work. What looks drawn on is actually uncovered.
